THE DETAILS
The marquise shows the most stone for the money and asks the most of the setting. Both halves of that are worth understanding.
It has the largest face-up area per carat of any cut, so yes. A one carat marquise covers noticeably more finger than a one carat round, and it's the reason people pick it when the budget is fixed and the look isn't.
Both tips are the vulnerable spots and both get a V prong that covers them. Set that way, a marquise wears normally. It's still worth wearing it aware: a long stone catches on a coat pocket more easily than a round does.
Every elongated brilliant does, and a marquise shows it more than an oval because it's longer. A dark band across the middle is normal. A good cut keeps it faint, and we don't buy the stones where it takes over the face.
The classic range is 1.85 to 2.10 times as long as it is wide. Shorter than that and it stops reading as a marquise; longer and it gets narrow, the points get thinner, and that's exactly where chips happen.
