THE DETAILS
Blue behaves differently from the other two colors, and these are the questions that follow from it.
Boron. A few atoms in the carbon lattice absorb red and yellow light and let the blue through. Boron also makes the stone conduct a little electricity, which is one of the ways a lab separates a blue diamond from a blue sapphire.
Tone and saturation. Tone is how dark the color sits, saturation is how strong it is, and a blue that's low on saturation drifts toward gray, sometimes with a green cast to it. The grades that read plainly blue are Fancy Intense and Fancy Vivid.
White gold or platinum. A cool metal leaves the color alone. Yellow gold reflects warmth up into the stone and pushes a blue toward gray, and rose gold does it harder still. It's the one metal choice on this page worth thinking about twice.
