Yes, at the same carat weight. An oval is a brilliant that has been stretched, so its weight spreads across a longer face instead of stacking under a smaller circle. A one carat oval runs about 7.7mm long by 5.7mm wide; a one carat round is about 6.5mm across. The oval covers noticeably more finger, and an eye reads length as size. Put that next to what the two cost per carat and an oval is one of the better size-for-the-money buys on our bench.
A dark band across the middle of the stone, shaped like a bow tie, and every elongated brilliant has one to some degree. It comes from the pavilion facets returning your own shadow instead of light when you look straight down a stretched brilliant. On a well-proportioned oval it stays faint and moves away as the stone tilts; on a badly proportioned one it holds a black stripe whatever you do. GIA doesn't publish a cut grade for fancy shapes at all, so no report is going to score it for you. Judge it face-up in the photograph, and if you can't tell what you're looking at on one of ours, contact us and we'll go through it.
They do, and it's most of the reason the shape exists. The long axis of the stone runs the same way as the finger, so the eye follows it and the hand reads longer and slimmer, which shorter fingers get the most out of. Ratio is the lever: 1.35 to 1.50 is the classic oval and still reads oval across a table, under about 1.30 it starts looking round, over about 1.55 it's a statement. A narrow band pushes the effect further and a wide one calms it down.
Four if you want to see the most stone, six once it gets big. The two ends of an oval are the thin part, so on a four prong head we put a prong on each end and one on each side, and the end prongs are the pair doing the protecting. Past about two carats we push people to six, because the extra pair keeps the long axis from rocking in the head, and a stone that rocks chews through prongs. Either way the head is set north to south, running with the finger; east west is a different look and a deliberate one.
Per carat, yes, for a plain reason: a round costs more to cut. Roughly half the rough crystal is polished away to make a round, while an oval keeps more of it, so it lands lower for the same weight and then looks bigger than that weight on the hand.
