Not the way a round does, and that's the whole point of the shape. An emerald cut is a step cut: long rectangular facets cut parallel to the girdle, running down like stairs to a keel line at the bottom instead of a point. You get broad flashes of white and dark that swap as the stone moves, which the trade calls a hall of mirrors, rather than thousands of small sparks. If fine sparkle is what you want, a round or an oval is the safer buy. If you want clean architecture and light moving in slabs, this is the cut.

VS2 or better is the honest floor, where a round can sit comfortably lower. The table on a step cut is wide and open and there is no crushed light to break up what sits underneath, so an inclusion that vanishes under a round's crown reads as a line or a dot you can find with your own eye. Same GIA grade, different visibility. We watch it happen at the bench: one SI1 grade looks like two different diamonds depending on which outline it was cut into.

A 0.80ct emerald cut looks bigger than a 0.80ct round, and it's the cut, not the weight: a step cut spreads its carat along the length and keeps a shallower body, so more of what you paid for lands where you can see it. A one carat emerald cut runs roughly 7 by 5mm against a round's 6.5mm circle, and the long line reads longer still on a finger. That makes it the shape to look at when the budget caps the carat before it caps the look you want.

1.40 is the classic, and most people land between 1.30 and 1.50. Under about 1.25 the outline starts reading square and you're closer to an Asscher. Over about 1.55 it turns dramatic, long and narrow, which some hands wear beautifully and some don't. The ratio changes the mirrors too: a longer stone gives you fewer, wider flashes, a squarer one stacks more of them up. Per carat usually yes, and then the grades pull some of it back. An emerald cut wastes far less of the rough crystal than a round does, so the cutting cost is lower and the price per carat follows it down. But because that open table shows color and clarity, the grade you actually want sits a step higher, and that costs.
