THE DETAILS
An oval buys apparent size. Here is what that's worth, and the one thing to look for before you commit.
Yes, and noticeably, at the same carat weight. A circle packs the weight under the middle of the stone; an oval lays it out along the length, so more diamond faces up. That's most of the reason people choose it.
A dark band across the waist of the stone, caused by the way light bends in an elongated shape. Every oval has one to some degree. A well cut oval keeps it faint, and we don't buy the stones where it takes over the face.
Between 1.35 and 1.45 times as long as it is wide is the classic oval, and it's what most people picture. Under 1.30 it starts to look like a round that didn't quite make it. Over 1.50 it reads narrow, which is exactly what some people want on a long finger.
It is diamond, graded on the same color and clarity scales as a mined stone and identical to one under a loupe. What changes is where it grew and what you pay: it's well below a mined oval of the same specification. Lab grown diamonds of 1.00ct and above come with an IGI certificate.
Better, arguably. A pendant hangs with the long axis pointing down, which is the orientation an oval wants anyway, and you're not looking at a pendant from six inches away, so the bow tie has nowhere to announce itself. There are oval pendants and oval studs on this shelf, not only rings.
